University Policies Related to Records Handling and Storage
University Policy: 101.8, Personnel Records
State law protects the confidentiality of employee personnel records and also provides guidance for the proper handling of employee personnel records by UNC Charlotte as a public institution. University Policy 101.8 defines what is considered a personnel record, where such records may be located, and their retention schedule. Additionally, the policy addresses persons permitted access to such records and their responsibility for maintaining confidentiality in handling and accessing them. Please take an opportunity to review University Policy: 101.8, Personnel Records and take time to ensure the proper storing and handling of personnel records, including those of faculty associated with reappointment, promotion and tenure. Please discuss this policy with all employees approved for access to handle these records.
University Policy: 402, Student Education Records (FERPA)
Federal law protects the confidentiality of records relating directly to a student and also provides guidance for the proper handling of records by UNC Charlotte as a public institution. University Policy 402 defines what is considered a student record and where such records may be located. Additionally, the policy addresses persons permitted access to such records and their responsibility for maintaining confidentiality in handling and accessing them. Please take an opportunity to review University Policy: 402, Student Education Records (FERPA). Chapters 121 and 132 of the General Statutes of North Carolina governs the retention and disposition of student related records. The UNC System Office provides minimum retention standards for the handling of student records in the UNC Records Retention and Disposition Schedule. Please take time to ensure the proper storing, handling, retention, and disposition of student related records. Please discuss this policy and schedule with all employees approved for access to handle these records.
Religious Accommodation for Fasting Holidays
Please be mindful that some of your students may be fasting during upcoming religious holidays and may request accommodation. As part of the University’s Religious Accommodation for Student Policy 409, faculty are asked to make reasonable accommodations for religious observances. This includes the opportunity to make up a test or other work missed due to an excused absence for a religious observance. Students may not perform at their peak during times of fasting, therefore accommodation may be requested.
Yom Kippur, a Jewish high holiday which requires fasting, will be observed October 4-5. For dates of other upcoming religious holidays, please access: https://diversity.charlotte.edu/campus-diversity-resources/religious-observances

Make Your Comebacks Stronger Than Your Setbacks: El camino se hace al andar
What is your dream? Join alumna Emily Francis as she reflects on her experiences as a first generation Latina at UNC Charlotte and reminds us that perseverance is a superpower. After arriving in the U.S. from Guatemala with a 6th grade education and limited English skills, Emily encountered a series of obstacles before earning a B.A. in Spanish and M.A.T. in English as a Second Language. Now a high school ESL teacher, Emily helps others navigate barriers and find their own paths. Despite a series of setbacks, Emily achieved her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. As a member of the Carolinas TESOL board, she has been a special guest on The Ellen Show, was elected Teacher of the Year in 2016, and serves as teacher liaison to the Cabarrus County Board of Education. We are thrilled to welcome her back to share her own journey with all of us in the UNC Charlotte community. Our bilingual speaker may use a combination of English and Spanish. Questions in both languages are welcome.
