The 2023-2024 schedule of Faculty Council and Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) meetings is available on the Faculty Governance website. The first FEC meeting will be held Thursday, September 7 at 1:00 PM. The first Faculty Council meeting will be held Thursday, September 28 at 1:00 PM. The deadline for placing items on the agenda is approximately one week prior to the meeting date. Since most items must also go through one of our faculty governance committees for their review and recommendations, the entire review cycle should be considered in meeting your organization’s needs.

The 2023 New Student Convocation for incoming first-year and transfer students will take place on Sunday, August 20 in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center at 2:00 p.m. Faculty are invited to participate in this tradition that celebrates the beginning of our new Niners academic journey. Please RSVP for the event as soon as possible. The registration form will close on August 17. Faculty are encouraged to wear regalia for the event.

The SoTL Call for Grant Proposals is open. This year, the SoTL Grants Program offers faculty funding for research on teaching and learning focused on High Impact Practices and Curricular Innovation, and Educational Technology Innovation. Proposals are due by 11:59 p.m. on October 1. Read below to learn how you can receive targeted support for getting your SoTL research funded.

SoTL Grant Proposal Writing Course
Enroll in this week-long course to receive targeted guidance for developing a fundable SoTL research proposal! This hybrid course, facilitated by Faculty Fellow Dr. Kim Buch, offers a scaffolded experience for designing and proposing a fundable SoTL research project that fits the goals and requirements of the new SoTL RFP. Optional writing feedback and consultations are offered throughout.

Drastic Dykes and Accidental Activists: Queer Women in the Urban South – An Author Talk with La Shonda Mims
La Shonda Mims is an Associate Professor of History at Middle Tennessee State University. Concerned with the intersections of gender, race, region, and queer identity, her book, Drastic Dykes and Accidental Activists, published by the University of North Carolina Press, examines lesbian life in Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Her 2019 article published in the Journal of Women’s History, “Drastic Dykes:The New South and Lesbian Life,” explored lesbian-feminist action in the urban New South. Co-sponsored by J. Atkins Library makes it easier than ever to access library resources with the new Library Mobile App. In the app, users can quickly search for books and articles, access their library accounts, view library hours and floor maps, get research assistance, and learn more about upcoming events. The app also includes a variety of other features such as information on Special Collections and University Archives and the Hight Architecture Library as well as links to the library’s social media accounts. To begin using the app, search for Ex Libris Library Mobile in your device’s app store. Once you download the app, search for and choose ‘UNC Charlotte’ as your library, choose NinerNet, and log in with your university credentials. Download the app and let us know what you think.

On-Campus Job Fair
The University Career Center (UCC) will host an On-Campus Job Fair on behalf of Student Employment. The event provides departments with an excellent opportunity to recruit students for on-campus positions; departments can recruit for FWS, STW, UPIP and Graduate Assistant positions. If your department or office still needs to hire student workers, there are a few spaces remaining to register for the event through your Hire-A-Niner account. The event will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 11:00-2:00, on Cone Lane (sidewalk between Cone Center and University Career Center) and will run concurrently with the Plaza Party. 

Gold Rush Plaza Party
The Career Center will host the Plaza Party on Wednesday, August 23, 11:00-2:00 at the CHHS/COED Plaza. The area will be filled with games, music, prizes, and food. This is a free event that kicks off the new academic year. In between games, students can network with prospective employers. Faculty and staff are invited to stop by and join in on the fun. Niner Career Challenge
The Career Center will host the third Niner Career Challenge. The event was the winner of the NCACE 2023 Innovation Award. This event is a chance for students to win Tuition & Fees for Spring 2024* and other monthly prizes. The challenge will open on Monday, August 28, and close on Thursday, November 30. Students must join the challenge and register to participate in the event. All details and activities will be available at the Niner Career Challenge webpage; students will track their activity though the link. Students must be a UNC Charlotte undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled and registered for classes for the Fall 2023 semester. The Career Center, Center for Graduate Life, Office of Identity, Equity & Engagement, University Center for Academic Excellence, and Niner Central Peer Hub have a variety of services, programs, and activities for students to help them plan for career readiness and engage in services and events that help them prepare for their future. Student participants must complete a number of career-related events & activities to be entered to win prizes for the monthly raffles and grand prize raffles.
