Beginning this semester (Fall 2023), the Graduate School is debuting a new, college-focused organizational structure that will provide students, faculty and staff a single point of contact for questions and support for all graduate academic services.

CONNECT Best Practices training modules are located on Canvas under published courses. Advisors and faculty can request a one-on-one or team follow-up training session centered around your departmental initiatives. The Foundational Concepts of Teaching and Learning series supports our commitment to excellence in teaching by promoting one foundational concept a year. This year’s concept is student learning outcomes. Visit the series website to learn about key resources available for faculty and staff to support teaching. This important series is a collaboration between the Center for Teaching and Learning, Communication across the Curriculum, J. Murrey Atkins Library, and the Office of Assessment and Accreditation.

Faculty are invited to register for the New Faculty Writing Community Kickoff Workshop. The workshop, which is a collaboration between the ADVANCE Faculty Affairs and Diversity Office and the Writing Resources Center, will be facilitated by Dr. Katie Garahan, Director of the Writing Resources Center at UNC Charlotte. The goal of the workshop is to help new faculty get excited about beginning their writing journey at Charlotte and to provide tips about how to establish a sustainable writing practice. For the remainder of the fall semester, the ADVANCE FADO Office will host a writing community for new faculty on Friday mornings, where new faculty can come to “SHUT UP and WRITE in a supportive environment – coffee/tea and snacks will be provided.

Faculty Invitation: Open Pedagogy Incubator
The UNC System Open Education Group is inviting interest from faculty instructors for the Open Pedagogy Incubator. The Incubator program supports faculty in adopting open principles to create more student-centered courses through a series of workshops, facilitated discussions, and curated readings, and participants will complete the program with a clear process for implementing open pedagogy in their courses. The program is modeled on NC State’s Open Pedagogy Incubator. The synchronous virtual program will launch in the second half of the fall 2023 semester and continue into the spring 2024 semester. Join us at a virtual information session on September 1, and visit the Open Pedagogy website for more information about the program and to apply. Expressions of interest will be accepted until September 18, 2023.

Download the Library Mobile App
Atkins Library makes it easier than ever to access library resources with the new Library Mobile App. In the app, users can quickly search for books and articles, access their library accounts, view library hours and floor maps, get research assistance, and learn more about upcoming events. The app also includes a variety of other features such as information on Special Collections and University Archives and the Hight Architecture Library as well as links to the library’s social media accounts. To begin using the app, search for Ex Libris Library Mobile in your device’s app store. Once you download the app, search for and choose ‘UNC Charlotte’ as your library, choose NinerNet, and log in with your university credentials. Download the app and let us know what you think.

Join 400+ UNC Charlotte faculty and students that have completed the Charlotte Launch National Science Foundation I-Corps program. Apply to participate in the Fall 2023 Charlotte Launch NSF I-Corps Cohort. The program provides UNC Charlotte faculty, staff and students with commercialization training and new NSF funding. The goal of the program is to identify potential commercial uses for technology and research. The next stage is a six month $50,000 NSF I-Corps Teams grant. Applications are currently open and are reviewed as they are submitted. Applications will close September 15 and the cohort launches October 4. Are you looking to engage undergraduates on a research, scholarly, or creative project? Have you thought about how an undergraduate student can help your scholarly research program? Have you had students asking you questions that would be interesting to further investigate? Are you looking to test a new question or try something new? Do you have a need for a student, but not the means? Yes? Yes. or Yes! The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) can help! The OUR Scholars program can help you find and employ students in collaborative learning through undergraduate research, scholarly and creative activities. OUR is pleased to announce that they are now accepting submissions for faculty project descriptions for the Spring 2024 OUR Research Scholars ProgramReady to submit? The deadline for submission is September 15. This is step one, so please encourage your students to apply for the program. The program is FWS eligible, but not required.

All researchers who are interested in a faculty exchange within the Baden-Württemberg/North Carolina system in the year 2024 are cordially invited to apply for a one-time travel grant of €1,200, funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of Baden-Württemberg. The duration of the exchange should be at least one week. For more details, please visit The University of Mannheim website. Application deadline is October 15.

Innovate Your Teaching: Faculty Workshop Series
The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) welcomes faculty back to campus this Fall with 25 years of commitment to teaching excellence and student success at UNC Charlotte. Engage in faculty development workshops from August 21-25 on high-impact and innovative teaching strategies to support student success and assist new faculty with onboarding and preparing for the first few weeks of class. NEW Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Grants Program
The SoTL Call for Grant Proposals is open! This year, the SoTL Grants Program offers faculty funding for research on teaching and learning focused on High Impact Practices and Curricular Innovation, and Educational Technology Innovation. Proposals are due by 11:59 p.m. on October 1. Read below to learn how you can receive targeted support for getting your SoTL research funded!

SoTL Grant Proposal Writing Course
Enroll in this week-long course to receive targeted guidance for developing a fundable SoTL research proposal! This hybrid course, facilitated by Faculty Fellow, Dr. Kim Buch, offers a scaffolded experience for designing and proposing a fundable SoTL research project that fits the goals and requirements of the new SoTL RFP. Optional writing feedback and consultations are offered throughout.

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers teaching and research awards to U.S. citizens in more than 135 countries. College and university faculty and administrators can join the more than 400,000 Fulbrighters, including a growing list of UNC Charlotte Fulbright scholars, who have come away with enhanced skills, new connections, and greater mutual understanding. The application deadline is September 15. Interested parties are encouraged to learn more about these opportunities via the Catalog of Awards or consulting with Joel Gallegos, associate provost for international programs and UNC Charlotte’s Fulbright scholar liaison.
