The 49er Family Fund annually allocates grants to campus initiatives related to student life at UNC Charlotte. These allocations help fund programming on campus that might otherwise be unable to be funded by a campus department, student organizations, etc. The 49er Family Fund seeks to serve as a funding catalyst for innovative, high-impact programs that benefit the larger campus community. The proposal form for the 2024-2025 academic year is available online; proposals should be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1. For questions, contact family@uncc.edu.

The Leadership and Mentoring Institute (LMI) was created by the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE) in response to the decline in professional development workshops and the lack of professional development opportunities for African American faculty and staff. Today, LMI remains a vehicle for helping people of color navigate higher education to increase their chances of being considered for senior administrative positions, gain tenure, and progress through the academic ranks.

This year, UNC Charlotte will be the campus partner in hosting this initiative, and we invite you to participate and share this information with your networks. For more information, visit diversity.charlotte.edu/lmi. The application deadline is April 10, 2024.

Note: While this opportunity is open to faculty and staff of color, ALL are encouraged to apply. Furthermore, all application decisions and LMI content are AABHE’s sole responsibility.

Atkins Digital Publishing Services Announces New Book

Atkins Library has published a new book, Subcritical: Third Culture Field Notes. Subcritical explores an innovative, interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists and artists. Based on a project funded by the National Science Foundation that studies how climate change influences the breakdown of rocks and the cracking of mountains, Subcritical integrates the arts with scientific research to communicate findings. Subcritical brings together scholarly and theoretical essays as well as richly illustrated artwork and case studies of design investigations. This novel work represents the type of multidisciplinary synergies possible when artists and scientists collaborate with each other. The volume is edited by Martha Cary (Missy) Eppes, Marek Ranis, and José L. S. Gámez. The book is now available open access as an ebook through the library’s catalog, and paperback copies can be purchased through UNC Press.
