April 28

What speech does academic freedom protect? Does institutional neutrality affect how you teach, research, or speak out? This session breaks down the scope of these principles, when they matter, and how both are being tested in today’s higher ed climate. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of your rights, the University’s responsibilities, and where questions remain about the boundaries of both in 2025 and beyond. Presenters: Jesh Humphrey, Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and General Counsel, and Sarah Edwards, Associate Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel

  • Tuesday, April 29, 12:00 – 1:00 PM, via Zoom (Register)

Registrants will receive the Zoom link prior to the presentation.

The Center for ADVANCing Faculty Success is partnering with the Academic Affairs Human Resources team, the University Human Resources department, and the Office of Legal Affairs to lead Best Practices for ADVANCing Faculty Recruitment Training. ADVANCing Recruitment Training is a two part process and is required of all members of faculty and AA administrator search committees. The first part is an online session in Canvas;  search committee members will complete this online session each academic year they serve on a search committee. The second part is a face-to-face workshop, which search committee members are required to have completed within the past five years PRIOR to their service on a search committee. The upcoming training on May 14 is the last training that will be offered until August 2025, so we encourage faculty to sign up now for the May 14 face-to-face training (virtual via Zoom), which is scheduled from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Register for training.

The 49er Intensive Transition (FIT) program is an immersive one-week experience that introduces new UNC Charlotte students to the campus community, familiarizes them with Charlotte’s support services, and encourages collaborative study with peers. FIT students arrive on campus one week before the fall semester kicks off and envelop themselves in enriching courses. This year we expect 350-375 students to take advantage of this opportunity.

Associate Deans, please be aware that you may receive overload requests from students in the program. Mini-fall term FIT classes are counted with fall semester registration and sometimes bring a student’s total over 18 credit hours. Their actual load in the fall term is not affected by FIT, however. Please contact Val Sosa if you have any questions about the process.
