Creating Navigable Paths for First-Generation Niners
To begin the summer, staff from First-Year and Transition Programs (Office of Undergraduate Education) coordinated a five-week Summer Institute where First-Gen faculty from various colleges and departments laid the groundwork for a larger training program for faculty and staff within the Division of Academic Affairs. Throughout the program, faculty created and edited personal teaching philosophies, reviewed Charlotte data as it relates to First-Generation student success in their respective academic colleges, provided strategies to support belonging in the classroom, and applied theory to practice using relevant media and personal experiences.
First-Gen Navigators is a program designed to support instructors, academic advisors, and all academic affairs staff with knowledge of our First-Generation student population at Charlotte. Supporting First-Gen students serves as an opportunity to further the success of all students. Eliminating hidden knowledge such as academic policies and systems, career and networking strategies, and college culture allows students to show up confidently and take full advantage of all that Charlotte has to offer. If you are interested in supporting the development of the Navigators Training Program, please contact Chris Walls, Assistant Director for First-Generation Academic Initiatives.
