urbanCORE Offers Drop-In Hours for Engaged Faculty
Interested in community-engaged research or teaching and don’t know where to start? Do you want to discuss a CE problem with an expert? Join Kim Buch in the Engaged Faculty Lounge on Wednesday, October 25, 1:00-2:00 p.m. in Sycamore 302. During engaged faculty lounge hours, you are invited to drop in for a chat with an experienced community-engaged teacher-scholar. Kimberly Buch is a professor in the department of Psychology. Her students work with her in a variety of contexts: studies on social justice topics, service-learning (SL) courses, and engaged scholarship projects. More Information.
International Education Week – Deadline Extended
The Office of International Programs (OIP) invites students, faculty and staff to submit globally focused events that will occur during International Education Week (IEW) for inclusion in OIP’s online calendar and printed publications. Additionally, faculty and staff are encouraged to apply for up to $250 in supplemental funds from OIP per event to defray costs associated with the programming. Event submissions have been extended and are now open until Wednesday, October 25. International Education Week is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of State. The purpose of the week is to celebrate the incredible opportunities afforded to us with international education. In doing so, we observe our human diversity, intercultural connections, and cultural understanding. During International Education Week, participants can expect globally-focused dialogue, lectures from experts in the field, performances from diverse cultures, films from around the world, and so much more. UNC Charlotte plays a special role in shaping awareness as we proudly serve a diverse student, faculty and staff population. Phi Beta Delta’s Global Perspective Series
UNC Charlotte’s award winning international honor society Phi Beta Delta is pleased to present “The necessity of travel for understanding: An educator’s Fulbright journey of discovery” as part of its Global Perspective Series. Dr. Michael Putman, Chair and Professor, Department of Reading and Elementary Education, will discuss his recent Fulbright Scholar experiences in Finland, South Africa, and Germany, including collaborations with two of UNC Charlotte’s international exchange partners. The presentation will take place Wednesday, October 25th, from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm in CHHS 207. For more information please visit the PBD website.
Faculty Research Grant Call for Proposals
The 2024-2025 Faculty Research Grants (FRG) Program is now open. Tenured, tenure-track, and faculty on research appointments are eligible to apply. Applications requesting funding to support research or creative projects are due on November 3, 2023, or March 22, 2024 (only for New Assistant Professor Proposal Development and Resubmission Program participants). Individual and joint proposals may request up to $8,000 or $16,000, including summer stipends of up to $4,200 per PI. Digital Media Literacy Modules in Canvas Commons
Atkins Library is introducing a newly-created series of modules covering various aspects of digital media literacy that can be incorporated into Canvas courses. The modules contain readings, videos, and evaluation activities on the topics of evaluating sources, information disorder, and social media. As media literacy is applicable to any subject area, faculty members can consider how these modules might be integrated into their courses. To access the media literacy course content, go to Canvas Commons and search for “Digital Media Literacy Resources for Canvas Course.” Natalie Ornat Bitting, the library’s Humanities librarian, created a resource guide outlining the content of the modules, suggestions for using them in class, and directions for adding them to Canvas courses. We hope that you will find these modules useful, and we encourage you to provide us with feedback on your experience. Autumn’s Echoes of Moonlit Poetry
Meet us at “midnight” (aka 3:00 p.m.) in the clover-covered woods for Autumn’s Echoes of Moonlight Poetry. Find your coven or troupe of woodland creatures as you read and enjoy dreamy, thought-provoking poetry and delicious treats. If you would like to read at this event, please share which poem you’d like to read by Friday, October 13. The forest floor will also be open for when the spirits inspire you to share your favorite poem or one of your own. Feel free to don your favorite costume or cloak as you enjoy a forest of dreamy rhymes and unsettling verse.
Book Talk by Yascha Mounk: The Identity Trap
Our democracies today are in search of true diversity, says Yascha Mounk—it’s both our greatest challenge and our greatest hope. In the pursuit of equality, a growing number of people have begun to define themselves in terms of their group identities (such as race or sexual orientation). But the Johns Hopkins professor says that’s actually counterproductive to our goal. He calls this “the identity trap,” and in his new book of the same name, he argues that our search for equality is not helped but harmed when we obsess over group identity. Call for Nominations
The Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professorship in Teaching award was established in 2006 and is awarded annually to a member of the faculty who has been awarded tenure within the last three years. The appointment is for a three-year term, and the announcement is made to the campus community at the annual Provost’s Awards Reception. The benefits of the appointment will include the inscription of the Professor’s name on a permanent plaque and the award of University resources above that normally given to faculty.
Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professorship in Teaching – Deadline January 12, 2024
The Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is granted biennially to an academic department, program, or unit in recognition of the collective responsibility of faculty members for maintaining high-quality teaching. The award is intended to recognize documented efforts that improve student learning and outcomes. The monetary award can be used at the discretion of the recipient unit for any purpose authorized for state appropriations. A permanent plaque has been created to move each year to the recipient unit in recognition of the award.

Canvas Studio’s in-video quiz feature allows instructors to embed interactive quiz questions at specific points in videos. Students can respond to multiple-choice, true/false, or other types of prompts while watching the video. This feature enhances student engagement, reinforces key concepts, and provides a way for instructors to assess understanding. Customization includes time limits and multiple attempts. Learn how to use this tool with your videos to increase student engagement!
Enhancing Cultural Awareness
This course is facilitated by the Office of International Programs. The training will present an overview of the common definition and assessment of culture at UNC Charlotte and explore cultural dimensions based on theory and research. Participants will receive resources for sample assignments and a mapping exercise to enhance student cultural awareness. This workshop counts towards the Essentials of Teaching and Learning Certificate.
