01/22/2021: New Procedure for Spring 2021 Grade Election

The Undergraduate Grading Policy for the 2020-21 academic year allows undergraduate students to elect Pass/No Credit grading in up to three courses for the entire academic year, including summer. No more than two courses can be elected for H/P/N grading per term. Students may be assigned an H grade for a final grade of C or better to designate that they have satisfied any progression (prerequisite) requirements.

Based on student feedback, there is a change for the grade election procedure for Spring 2021 semester as follows:

  • Students may complete their courses and review their letter grades before deciding whether to request Pass/No Credit grades to replace standard grades for any of their Spring 2021 courses
  • Students in full-term and 2nd half-term courses can make grade elections between May 20 and June 1
  • Students in 1st half-term courses can make grade elections between March 20 and April 2
  • Instructions for making Pass/No Credit grade elections will be provided in March
  • Students who already have made grade elections for Spring 2021 will be contacted by the Office of the Registrar with further instructions

Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their academic advisor and course instructor before making a decision to be aware of any implications on future plans. Please be aware of the details of this grading exception.

12/11/2020: P/N Grading Amendment for Fall 2020

The Faculty Executive Committee approved another amendment to the current Academic Policy guiding Pass/No Credit (P/N) for undergraduate students for the 2020-2021 academic year (Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Summer 2021) to allow undergraduate students to elect Pass/No Credit (P/N) for up to three undergraduate courses for the entire academic year, and no more than two per term.

For the Fall 2020 term, up to two courses can be elected by December 16. For Spring and Summer 2021 terms, students must elect Pass/No Credit (P/N) by the date identified in the Academic Calendar (January 27 for spring term and May 25 for summer full term).

Students will be allowed to elect P/N for any enrolled course(s), however if a student elects a grade of Pass (P) they will not be able to progress to any course that requires a C or better without departmental approval. This amends the current Academic Policy guiding Pass/No Credit for the 2020-2021 academic year and applies to undergraduate students only.

How this will work:

  1. Students will NOT be able to change a course grade in these cases:
    • courses for which a P/N were determined before the start of the semester;
    • courses completed and graded in the first half-term of Fall 2020;
    • courses from which the student withdrew; and
    • courses for which the student has been found responsible and given a grade penalty for an academic integrity violation.
  2. A grade of Pass (P) will be allowed to meet degree requirements for graduation including counting toward the student’s major, minor, and general education requirements, but will not meet progression requirements for any courses for which a C or higher is required.
  3. For students who make a P/N election prior to the deadline, faculty will see only H/P/or N options when grading.
  4. Students enrolled in professional school programs should consult with their advisors or program directors regarding licensure or accreditation requirements, before making an election.
  5. Courses selected for Pass/No Credit during the 2020-2021 academic year will be excluded from the maximum four Pass/No Credits allowed in the current policy and will have no impact on the student’s GPA.
  6. No changes have been made to the duration in which an incomplete (I) grade can be assigned a standard letter grade before it converts to an F or U grade. Students will continue to have twelve months to complete the requirements associated with an incomplete grade.
  7. In addition to providing grading accommodations, UNC Charlotte has expanded its withdrawal practices to allow students to withdraw with extenuating circumstances if their course(s) were impacted as a result of COVID‐19. Course withdrawals for this reason will not count against any institutional limits.
  8. To allow students the ability to elect P/N, the Fall 2020 grading period for instructors will now open December 17.

11/06/2020: Amendment to Grading Policy for 2020-2021

The Faculty Executive Committee approved the following amendment to the current Academic Policy guiding Pass/No Credit (P/N) for undergraduate students for the 2020-2021 academic year (Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Summer 2021):

  • UNC Charlotte will allow undergraduate students to elect Pass/No Credit (P/N) for up to three undergraduate courses for the entire academic year, no more than two per term.
    • Fall 2020 Term: Up to two courses can be elected for the Fall 2020 term by December 16, 2020
    • Spring and Summer 2021 Terms: Students must elect Pass/No Credit (P/N) by the date identified in the Academic Calendar
  • Students will be allowed to have the grade of H recorded on transcripts for prerequisite courses in which they earned a C or better. The H grade will signify that they have satisfied progression (prerequisite) requirements. Students in a progression (prerequisite) course should be advised to complete the course for a letter grade. They will then have the option of petitioning for a H/P/N grade after grades are posted and until January 8.

This amends the current Academic Policy guiding Pass/No Credit for the 2020-2021 academic year and applies to undergraduate students only.
