College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean Transition

Dear colleagues:

As you know, Dean Nancy Gutierrez has announced her intention to retire effective June 30, 2022. Dean Gutierrez has served as dean for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) for 16 years and has guided the college through a period of significant growth in research and graduate education. She has been a champion for diversity, equity and inclusion and has been a national leader in advancing the role of the liberal arts and sciences in undergraduate and graduate education. I want to personally thank her for her exceptional leadership and service to UNC Charlotte and I look forward to celebrating her many accomplishments with you this spring.

Beginning July 1, 2022, John Smail will begin a term-limited appointment as dean for CLAS. Dr. Smail currently serves as associate provost for undergraduate education and dean of University College. He joined the University in 1988 and went on to chair the history department for nine years before assuming his present position. As dean of University College, he has developed and implemented student success initiatives with a particular focus on first-year programs and at-risk students and led the two-year planning process to develop the Prospect for Success quality enhancement plan. Currently, he is leading the general education redesign and planning for the next SACSCOC quality enhancement project. I am confident that his background and expertise will provide a smooth transition into this new role.

Thank you for your continued support of the College and its work.

Sincerely,

Joan F. Lorden
Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
