New Codes Will Differentiate Distance Education from On-Campus Programs

UNC Charlotte will be changing the way distance education is tracked in Banner, in order to differentiate between programs that are offered on-campus versus distance education (DE). These changes will provide for more accurate reporting and enable analyses that were previously not possible.

The change also allows the University to comply with the UNC Board of Governors’ new policy that provides a Definition of DE for Fee-Billing Purposes. This policy requires, starting Fall 2022, that System schools bill students based on what program the student is in rather than the types of courses that the student takes. For fee-charging purposes, a distance education program is one designed to deliver 80 percent or more of the direct instruction online or at an off-campus location.

Each distance education program will have a campus code of “D,” and on-campus programs will have a campus code of “M”. If a student happens to be in both an on-campus program and a DE program, the fees a student pays will be based on the campus associated with the student’s primary program.

The changes will be phased in over time. Records for students who are active for Fall 2022 will have their campus code updated prior to July 2022, the start of the term’s fee assessments.
