Research Administration Ticketing Webinars

2023 Race and Social Justice Book Release and Policy Improvement Symposium
Join members of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) on May 3 to celebrate the release of a book of best practices and policy recommendations based on efforts to dismantle anti-Black racism at UNC Charlotte. The book, Race and Social Justice: Building an Inclusive College through Awareness, Advocacy and Action (May 2023), is edited by Dr. Kendra Jason, CLAS Race and Social Justice Advocate, who organized six working groups in CLAS to focus leadership on promoting equity and anti-bias programming at the University and to engage in anti-racist professional development to improve student experiences. Recommendations in the book are useful in other higher education settings, so educators and other community members are encouraged to attend to gather information and to network with University staff and scholars. The book project was a recipient of an Inclusive Excellence Grant from the UNC Charlotte Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Free Expression and Constructive Dialogue Task Force Introduces Website, Announces Heterodox Academy’s Campus Communities Membership
The Free Expression and Constructive Dialogue (FECD) task force recently unveiled its inaugural website: freeexpression.charlotte.edu. The site provides information on events focusing on free expression topics occurring on campus, opportunities to engage with others, and resources to learn more about free expression and constructive dialogue. The FECD held four events this spring to inform and engage faculty and students on those topics.
The FECD also announces that UNC Charlotte is one of the 23 universities selected to join the initial cohort of the Heterodox Academy’s Campus Community Network. The Heterodox Academy is a nonpartisan nonprofit that works to improve the quality of research and education by promoting open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement in institutions of higher learning. Campus Community Network co-chairs will foster a community of academics to organize events, host monthly gatherings, and collaborate with leaders on their campuses. Read more
Atkins Library News
Atkins Library has published a new book, Race and Social Justice: Building an Inclusive College Through Awareness, Advocacy, and Action. Edited by Kendra Jason and written by faculty and staff from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Race and Social Justice: Building an Inclusive College Through Awareness, Advocacy, and Action is designed to support college and university members as they navigate and aim to eliminate individual, interpersonal, and institutional discrimination and seek to create more inclusive workplaces and learning environments for faculty, staff, and students. Through the narratives of faculty and staff from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, who were charged with dismantling anti-Black racism, we learn from their concerns, challenges, successes, and change process; as well as what works and does not when building diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice into the fabric of a large college. This book centers the work of six Race and Social Justice working groups. Each chapter will detail research in the areas of self-reflection, anti-racist workplace practices, policy, faculty research and outreach, graduate recruitment and success, and undergraduate student success. National- and college-level statistics are provided as context for recommendations, action steps, and suggested short- and long-term planning towards racial equity in higher education. The book is now available as an ebook through the library’s catalog, and paperback copies can be purchased through UNC Press.
