Providing Early Feedback to Students on Unsatisfactory Progress

Attention Faculty:

As you prepare for your Spring 2022 classes, please design your syllabus so that you are able to provide early feedback and meet the deadlines listed below. Research and our own experience show that students have the ability and desire to improve – they just need the awareness and encouragement to do so. Providing early and reliable feedback is one of the best ways we can make them aware of any academic performance issues and encourage them to work harder and/or differently for the remainder of the semester. In addition, advisors are making extensive use of early alerts and mid term grades to identify students showing emerging signs of academic concern.

Early Alerts
If you are teaching a 1000 or 2000 level course, you need to submit a Week 4 progress survey in CONNECT (no later than Friday, February 4, 2022) indicating students who may be of concern in your class.

Midterm Grades
All faculty must report midterm grades by Week 8 of the semester (Wednesday, March 2, 2022).

  • At a minimum, you need to submit grades for all undergraduate students earning a D or F and graduate students earning a C or U.
  • Reporting all midterm grades for all students is highly encouraged and can be done using your Canvas gradebook.

Finally, if you are teaching in a multi-section course, this would be a good time to get together with your colleagues to establish criteria for early alerts and midterm performance.

February 4, 2022 – 12:00 p.m. 4th week CONNECT progress survey (1000 & 2000 level courses)
March 2, 2022 – 12:00 p.m. Midterm grades reporting (all faculty)
March 21, 2022 Last day for students to withdraw
