Common Reading Author to Visit Campus
Scott Ellsworth, author of this year’s Common Reading book The Ground Breaking, will speak on campus Thursday, October 13. The talk will take place in Student Union #340 at 7:00 p.m. and will be open to the UNC Charlotte community. The Common Reading Experience at UNC Charlotte provides a shared academic experience to assist first-year students in their transition to the university. In classes that have adopted The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice, students have the opportunity for self-reflection, critical thinking, student interaction, and understanding of diverse perspectives. Classroom Presentations: International Student Panel Discussions Applications Open
Are you teaching course content that could be enhanced by hearing the perspectives of international students in your class? The Cultural Ambassador Program facilitates panel presentations by international students in classrooms and trainings. Faculty interested in having Cultural Ambassadors present in your class should complete the online Cultural Ambassador Program request form. The deadline to request fall presentations is September 5.
Center for Teaching and Learning Workshops
New Canvas Quizzing
This workshop will teach you the basics of creating quizzes in Canvas for assessments using the New Canvas Quizzing Tool. We will also show you how to migrate classic quizzes to new quizzes. We recommend it for anyone new to quizzing in Canvas or creating new quizzes from scratch.

Canvas Assignments and Gradebook
Ensure your Canvas assignments and gradebook are organized so students can track their grade throughout the semester and learn tips and tricks to make grading easier. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to use the Canvas Assignments page to set up your Gradebook to calculate course grades. You’ll also learn how to create and grade assignments, enter grades with SpeedGrader, and use rubrics for communicating expectations of quality.

Teaching with Poll Everywhere
This workshop will introduce faculty/staff to Poll Everywhere, and how to use the student response software in classroom and other learning spaces. During the workshop participants will explore how to get registered and create polling content within Poll Everywhere. We will guide you on downloading your class roster from Canvas into Poll Everywhere and how to export grades from the polling responses into Canvas.

Getting Started with Active Teaching and Learning
Active learning requires students to be engaged in their learning rather than being passive listeners. To enhance learning, students must speak, write, think deeply, and collaborate with others about the content and concepts presented in class. This workshop provides an introduction to active teaching and active learning strategies that can be used during class. This workshop counts towards the Essentials of Teaching and Learning Certificate.

Technology Development and Proof-of-Concept Fund
Research and Economic Development, through the Office of Research Commercialization and Development, is offering proof-of-concept grants for up to $10,000 to support product development and initial testing of new university-owned innovations and technologies with strong commercial potential. Through this program, the university hopes to fill a critical funding gap along the innovation continuum and reduce some of the barriers associated with licensing and commercialization by adding significant value to early-stage innovations. Charlotte Urban Institute: Virtual Discussion on Gentrification and Displacement
Join the Charlotte Urban Institute on September 22 at 12:00 p.m. for a virtual conversation about gentrification and displacement. We’ll talk through what these terms mean, how we can be more precise with our language, and why it matters. The panel will include Ismaail Qaiyim, local lawyer and housing advocate; Dr. Kendra Jason, a Gambrell Faculty Fellow and UNC Charlotte associate professor of Sociology; and moderator Dr. Aaron Houck, Director of Regional Policy for the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute.
Be Part of Charlotte Teachers Institute’s Class of 2023 Seminar Leaders
Are you interested in sharing your research with a broader audience? Do you care about public education? Do you see PK-12 teachers as allies in your work? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then consider submitting a seminar proposal idea for the Charlotte Teachers Institute (CTI) lineup of 2023 seminars. CTI is an educational partnership among UNC Charlotte, Johnson C. Smith University, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) to strengthen teaching and learning through collaboration, creativity, leadership, and content knowledge. CMS teachers in grades PK-12 apply to participate in professor-led seminars based on research and teaching interests with the goal of creating original curricula for CMS students. To date, 800+ CTI Fellows have written more than 1,145 original curriculum units, all available on CTI’s website. Check out CTI’s website for more information, including the commitment to racial equity and testimonials from teachers, professors, and funders. Submit your ideas by September 12.
