Call for Applications: Interim Dean of the Graduate School

Applications are invited from the UNC Charlotte faculty for an interim position as Dean of the Graduate School. The Dean has primary responsibility for the Graduate School’s mission and outcomes including its programmatic, financial, and management operations that support the University’s strategic goals for graduate education. The anticipated duration of the appointment is 18 months, beginning in January 2023. More information.

Nominations Sought for Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society

Phi Beta Delta (PBD) is an international honor society open to faculty, staff and students.PBD has as its purpose the recognition of experience in the areas of international education exchange and/or international scholarship. It also serves as a means for encouraging interdisciplinary interchange and serves as a catalyst for developing a network among faculty, students, and staff involved. Please consider nominating faculty, staff or students to PBD by using the nomination form found on the PBD Membership webpage. The nomination form will close on Wednesday, October 12.

Seeking Nominations: First Citizens and de Silva Awards

The Graduate School invites nominations for the 2023 First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal. This award recognizes a senior full-time faculty member for outstanding scholarship, creativity, and/or research. Nominations may come from any UNC Charlotte faculty member. The First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal has been awarded since 1988, with last year’s honoree being Dr. Jean-Claude Thill, Geography and Earth Sciences. The award, consisting of a cash prize, framed citation and a medal, will be presented in the spring semester at a ceremony and reception presided over by the Chancellor, officials of First Citizens Bank, the Interim Dean of the Graduate School and University officers. View more information on this year’s nomination form and the selection process. The deadline for nominations is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2022.

The Graduate School is also seeking nominations for the annual competition for the 2023 Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award. This award recognizes a full-time member of the graduate faculty who exemplifies outstanding graduate mentoring. Nominations should come from a chair of the academic department. This award was established in memory of Dr. Harshini de Silva, an associate professor of biology, who was noted for her dedication to the academic and professional development of graduate students. The 2022 award recipient was Dr. Adam Reitzel, Department of Biological Sciences. The award, consisting of a crystal obelisk, a framed citation and a cash prize, will be presented in the spring semester at a ceremony and reception presided over by the Chancellor, the Interim Dean of the Graduate School and University officers. Learn about UNC Charlotte’s repository of scholarly works, Niner Commons, and how you can leverage it to increase the dissemination of your work, optimize your ORCiD research profile, and ensure long-term preservation for your work..

New Canvas Quizzing
This workshop will teach you the basics of creating quizzes in Canvas for assessments using the New Canvas Quizzing Tool. We will also show you how to migrate classic quizzes to new quizzes. We recommend it for anyone new to quizzing in Canvas or creating new quizzes from scratch.

Teaching with Poll Everywhere
This workshop will introduce faculty/staff to Poll Everywhere, and how to use the student response software in classroom and other learning spaces. During the workshop participants will explore how to get registered and create polling content within Poll Everywhere. We will guide you on downloading your class roster from Canvas into Poll Everywhere and how to export grades from the polling responses into Canvas.

Graduate Faculty Mentor Training Scheduled for October 14

As part of efforts to improve the research climate on campus, the Graduate School is offering training to graduate faculty who seek to be better research mentors. This training comes from the evidence-based practices of the CIMER Institute (Center for Improved Mentoring Experiences in Research) at the University of Wisconsin. More information/Registration.

Demeter Receives Psychonomic Society Best Article Award

Dr. Elise Demeter, Director of Academic Research & Assessment in the Office of Effectiveness and Analytics, was honored as one of the 2022 recipients of the Psychonomic Society’s Best Article Award. Her publication entitled, “Reward magnitude enhances early attentional processing of auditory stimuli”, was published by the journal Cognitive, Affective, & Behavioral Neuroscience. Award recipients receive a cash prize and recognition at the Psychonomic Society’s annual meeting this November.

Dean of Students Office Seeking Commencement Bell Ringers

Students are encouraged to apply to serve as a bell ringer for their commencement ceremony. One bell ringer will be selected for each ceremony. Applicants must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA and be in good disciplinary standing. The deadline to apply is 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, October 23. More information.
