You are invited to attend a two-hour interactive workshop on Friday, Nov. 6,10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., in the Career Center Classroom (Atkins 156), facilitated by Karen Resendes, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Westminster College and current President of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR). Many have contributed to UNC Charlotte’s efforts to strengthen student learning through initiatives such as the Charlotte Core, Communication Across the Curriculum, Career Center Career Collaborators, Preparing for Success, or research-embedded course development. This workshop brings those efforts together to explore how we can create a more intentional and connected student learning journey. This interactive session will focus on developing a shared institutional language for competency development across a student’s educational experience. Using the Charlotte Core competencies of Critical Thinking, Engagement Across Perspectives, Quantitative Data Analysis, and Communication as a guiding framework, participants will examine how these competencies are introduced, reinforced, practiced, and assessed from the first year through graduation. We will explore connections among general education, degree programs, undergraduate research, internships, co-curricular experiences, and career preparation. Through guided discussions, examples, and a curricular mapping activity, participants will identify opportunities to better scaffold competency development across programs and disciplines while reducing silos and aligning existing initiatives. Participants will leave with:

  • Practical examples of competency-centered curriculum design
  • A curricular mapping and planning tool
  • Strategies for strengthening connections among academic, co-curricular, research, and career experiences
  • Access to follow-up support from University College partners

Please RSVP no later than Monday, November 2.
